WAYLAND Spring is a month and a day away. Who can wait? But with the forecast for a possible snowstorm this week, we asked Andrew Blank, owner of Lawn Angels of Wayland LLC, what its been like this year operating a business that plows snow?Q: What do you have to say about the snow season we have had this year?A: Its been a long winter. All the snow we had this year fell within a month. Normally, its pretty spread out. On average we get close to 43 inches of snow for the season, but this year we have had about 58 inches essentially in less than a month.Q: What was the worst storm for you this season and why?A: The worst storm was the one on Dec. 19 and 20, because it snowed for two to three days and we were out there for five or six days. For my company, we started on the 18th the night before pre-salting and getting everything prepped up, going over the routes and making sure all the equipment was set up all the Bobcats were fueled up, trucks were ready to go, doing the final adjustments on the plows and making sure everyone knew their jobs.Q: What did you do after it stopped snowing?A: We plowed throughout the storm and when the storm was over, we were still out moving all the large piles of snow in the parking lots, stacking the snow up and cleaning up everything so we dont lose any parking spaces for the commercial or industrial properties. The Bobcats have an 8-foot wide bucket that pushes the snow and stacks it up to make room. After that we were out salting.Q: If it snowed for two days, dont your drivers need sleep?A: We stagger the drivers. We have people on the roads at all times while others are taking breaks, so we can always have vehicles out there in the storm and keep everyone rested and fresh.Q: Tell me about your business.A: We snowplow for residential homes in Sudbury, Wayland, Weston and Lincoln. Most of our business is commercial and industrial in Sudbury, Framingham, Norwood, Dedham and West Roxbury.Q: And you do landscaping as well?A: I started the business eight years ago. I had done landscaping before and began doing it by myself. Within a year, everything grew very quickly because of the quality of our service, relations with customers and reasonable pricing. We do landscape construction, and we also work with general contractors, carpenters. We do anything having to do with your property, including painting and redoing driveways. We also design, create and install pools, ponds, patios and walkways.Q: In this economy, it must help to be so diversified?A: Whats helping us in this economy is that we are so versatile. If we were just in lawn maintenance and a person got hurt by the economy, thats the first thing to go. A gain in one area makes up for a loss in another. So the storms made up for the drop off in construction in the fall.Q: Whats most challenging for you?A: Working in the most hazardous environment weather-wise when most people cant even drive. Coordinating all the trucks, keeping everyone safe and preparing for all the variables. When you are out there, theres no room for error. We always have backup plans and backup equipment so that if customers have to get out for an emergency, they can.Q: What makes your business different?A: We charge per inch rather than per time. On an average annual basis, it saves customers money. We continually go through a route of about 15 to 20 residential homes per truck, so each driveway is getting plowed every two to three hours on average. Customers are paying one fee of $55 for 2 to 6 inches, as opposed to $35 each time they come to a home during the storm.Q: Do you have any tips of what homeowners can do before a storm?A: Keep gas tanks full, keep washer fluid full and keep windshield wipers raised so that when they turn on their cars, the wipers dont beak.Q: Can you talk about an unusual experience you have had while plowing?A: We plow factories in West Roxbury with about a million square-foot parking lot. One of the factories, about 25 feet high, is on the Charles River. With all the wind from the river, there were snow drifts up to the roof of the building covering the entrance of the building. The Bobcats had to go in and scoop out 25 feet of snow.
